The Bees

I would never forget this line when I watched the movie "The Happening".... or was it "Knowing"? I forgot which movie but it was this line that caught my attention:

"If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live."

Einstein said that. And I believe it to be true. It was also re-affirmed by the years of work by Rudolf Steiner.

And the growing concern that the bees population is a huge problem.

It is believed that the bees are responsible for 75% of the crops to produce, because they need pollinators. They cause the flowers to prouce, seeds, grains, fruits and vegetables. Without the bees, there would be no mangoes, apples, cherries, strawberries, honey..... and our livestock produce would suffer too, because they can't eat grass.... and so goes the cycle.

To put it simply, without the bees, the human race would be next to be extinct.

There's also the problem that the bees are pollinating plants that are GMOs, and all the chemicals and pesticides used in farm crops. That's why they are having problems with the bee population.....

Why am I sharing this now? Because, just today a swarm of bees came to our house, turns out they have a previous hive somewhere here and a colony plans to stay here for the moment..... and original thought would be, to exterminate them and that they are pests... but no, they are not.

so, please please.... let's live with them... we are supposed to have a coexitsting relationship with them.

Kudos to all Bee Keepers I know, Mr Nicanor Perlas (Iloilo) and Tito Leo Avila.

Eco City?

Follow my blog with bloglovin

I have been thinking long and hard before having this article made. One, I am not an investor and it such a shame to talk about these things and feeling quite "powerless" because I haven't made investments for the city - YET. (I need to make large amount of moolahs for that which I plan "eco" so nothing can stop me.) Two, I am not on the streets protesting about the proposed coal power plant, nor have I tried "running for a cause". I did sign for a petition letter once for the "Save the Timugan River" but that is not enough....

To talk about these things I would probably come out as a clanging cymbal. But, it's bothering me. I love Davao City so much... that even though I admired the developments hanging around the corner I have often grieved for the prices of urbanization we have to pay.

Yes, I have enjoyed technology... and yes I have contributed to the carbon footprint. I have always felt that going green is quite hard to come around specially if not everybody shares the same passion you do. But, I have been influencing my family bit by bit, because it sure takes some time to change habits. I have tried to influence people by giving them copies of 11th Hour a documentary with Leonardo di Caprio in it which is better than Al Gore's. I have supported in my own way, not grandiose (promoting them..bridging like minded individuals) various people in the environment fields: Councilor Leo Avila, Kuya JoeGreen and Loud Plastics Creation by Maej (i have yet to buy some of her green pieces.. saving up for it. hehe. ).

Last April 7, 2011 I read some articles online that Mayor Sara Duterte wanted to venture on eco-tourism and have our beloved Davao City dubbed as "eco city". I was enthused. Huwaw! Being Eco is just around the corner. But, with the recent proposal of Aboitiz to have a coal-fired power plant which they market as "clean"... I don't think the stand is consistent with the tag "eco city" anymore.

I have attended a talk with their VP in one of the meetings I joined... but because I was "late"... I never mentioned my stand on my blog. All I got was their comparison between solar, wind, wave sources with the coal plant. They mentioned to everybody that we are running out of "power" and creating wind, solar, wave powered plants would take a long time compared to the coal which is easy to make and thus would provide solution for the impending power shortage.

But, I saw online that coal is much more expensive because of it's by product. And that there is never a "clean coal".

Clean or not my heart feels coal shouldn't be here. I do hope our country will go even more "greener". Meanwhile... i'll just do things in my own little way. And continue sharing the movie 11th Hour... reduce my carbon footprint in every possible way...

the 2011 Forecast of Doreen Virtue is really coming to fruition..... Lightworkers.... who are close to the government I implore you to take one bold step to make it done.....

Note: While I was making this article there were no statements made that the coal powered plant would be in Davao City. But, I heard it has a second option which is already approved and that is Sta. Cruz.

S-tress? Not a problem.

Recently, i gave a talk to graduating students of Accountancy at University of Mindanao. I was invited by my cousin Jane to talk about "Stress Management". I am in the spa industry and that's one of our main thing in the industry.

It was a great experience and it's quiet challenging to get their attention. One, i'm not far their age.. so it could be just like a case of... "we know what you know." and they could be rolling their eyes. I stammered during the first few minutes and I was laughing about it because I was currently under stress. Haha.

But, with a few humor here and there I got their attention and I was at ease. It was my first time to come up with a "Stress Management" module. I got an outline online and added a few things here and there from my experience.

Psychologists would say we all need stress.... but, my spiritual gurus say... we can always choose not to create stress in our life. So, I just gave the college students the basics... it's hard enough to manage stress what more eliminating it in your life?

Although, its not exactly THAT hard to eliminate stress.. but with the programs we have... it's gonna be mighty challenging. :)

The following are my steps to managing stress..... although I know everyone knows about this.... but we might all be needing a lil review noh? :)

1.) Find a Support - a friend, mentor, minister, councilor.... to talk to. :)

2.) Get organized - arrange the clutter in your room or work area to think clearly.

3.) Take breaks, give yourself "me" time - get at least 10-15 minute break to power nap, or listen to soothing songs in your mp3 players or ipod, take a walk, anything to give you a break mentally..

4.) Take good care of yourself - eat properly, get a good rest... allow yourself to do something you enjoy each day... :) sometimes, when we feel stressed we tend to do the opposite. Hydrate yourself... :)

5.) Get regular exercise - blow off the steam and release it through excercise. This will relieve some symptoms of depression and stress. But, don't overdo it! Too much of something is bad... 45 mins. to an hour a day would be great! :)

6.) Get a hobby, do something different - add some spice in your life and do something you haven't done yet that you sure would enjoy. sign up for dance lessons, or voice lessons. Go to that film making class or photography class...

7.) Slow Down - the journey is the destination.. relax.... don't live in a hurry, curry life.... enjoy the moment. stop, and smell the coffee....

8.) Laugh, use humor - watch funny movies, be with your friends who makes you laugh, surround yourself with laughter... but a bit of advice... don't laugh at anybody's expense. if you must, laugh about yourself... it is strength beyond measure.

9.) Keeping a Diary - or a BLOG! hehe. I'm sure to some.. blogging is part of their stress management program (its part of mine!). :) Veryyy effective. It keeps me sane.. and it helps me live in the moment and cherish what happened in the past... :)

10.) Learn to relax - Get a massage!!! Go to our spa (Angel of Water Wellness Center) haha. or the nearest spa near you.... :) Do visualization techniques... deep breathing.... relax.. relax... use your different sense: touch, taste, smell, sight and sound.

for touch: get a massage, get a warm bath, go for a swim, change into comfy clothes...

for taste: eat a comforting meal, eat healthy food, sip your choice of herbal tea, drink fine wine with friends not Red Horse , ok ?? :)

for smell: smell lavender or chamomile, don on your favorite perfume or scent, shop for flowers, breathe the fresh air, light a scented candle..

for sight: watch a funny movie, read a good book, watch the clouds, watch the horizon...

for sound: listen to calm, classical music or something instrumental (it's good for your brain waves), sing to yourself, say positive affirmations for yourself, play your favorite musical instrument... if you know how to. hehe. or ask someone to play it for you. Ji Hoo from BOF would come in handy.. haha. :)

I guess that's about it. I'm sure... there are lots and lots of ways to manage stress...

You? What do you do when you are stressed? I'd love to hear from you.... :)

Egyptian Museum

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This museum is home to the most extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities in the world. Of course, it should have the most extensive collection since it's in Egypt for crying out loud.

Established by the Egyptian government in 1835. They exhibit more than 120,000 collections. This is located at Tahrir square, Cairo, Egypt.

It's also the first big museum, I've ever been too. Photographs are not allowed inside, so I can’t show what’s inside the museum.

It contains a lot of coffins (made out of granite, limestone or covered with gold), statues, tables, jewelries, the treasures found from King Tutankhamen's tomb, weapons, instruments, chariots, and other stuffs .

Of course this is where you will see the mummies - they have a Royal Mummy Room and you have to pay for another extra to go inside. We did not get to go inside because almost everyone’s itching to get out of the place - medyo mainit rin ang museum plus everyone’s tired.

This is also where one of the scenes in the blockbuster hit movie "The Mummy" was shot.

Ancient Egyptian Pyramids of Giza

A pyramid is any three-dimensional polyhedron where the faces other than the base are triangular and converge on one point, called the apex.

The base of a pyramid can be any polygon but is typically a square, leading to four non-base faces. - from Wikipedia.

The most famous pyramids are the ones found in Egypt.

There are three pyramids in Giza - there is the Khufu's Pyramid, Khafre's Pyramid and Menkaure Pyramid.

Khufu's Pyramid, is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids bordering what is now Cairo, Egypt and is the only remaining member of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It is believed the pyramid was built as a tomb for Egyptian pharaoh Khufu. The Great Pyramid was the tallest man made structure in the world for over 3,800 years. - from Wikipedia

Khafre's Pyramid, is the second largest and the tomb of Pharoah Khafre. The pyramid has a base length of 215.25 m (707 ft) and originally rises to a height of 143.5 m (471 ft) The Pyramid is made of Limestone blocks(weighing more than 2 tons each). - from Wikipedia

Menkaure's Pyramid, is the smallest among the three pyramids and the tomb of Egyptian Pharaoh Menkaure. It was probably completed that time between the 26th century BC.

I wasn't expecting to be THERE - for real - but there I am standing right in front on one of the Ancient Seven Wonders of the World and the only surviving structure in modern times. Woot.

Spock

Looking for someone?

Try Spock.com - the best people search on the Web.

Spock launched their private Beta last April 2007 and now they are ready and confident to show you that Spock is not just another website. Spock is a search application that would help you find friends and colleagues. If you join the said website you can build your own search network to look for anyone you know who is on the internet.

So, whenever you search, Spock.com would personalize whatever your results so that they can include information about your friends and colleagues or whoever you were looking for. You can also enhance your search experience even further by establishing a trust relationship with other people who are on Spock. By connecting with trusted contacts you will be able to search within their network to rediscover people you've lost touch with and make new acquaintances through friends.

So, this is basically a social community site and a people search website rolled into one.

Of course, I needed to try it. I signed up and got to use Spock's search engine. And, it's a wow!

You see, you don't just search using the name of your friend, you can search using whatever it is they are currently doing now. And I tried to type in "fashion designer".

http://www.spock.com/q/fashion-designer

And out comes that result (just click the link above).

You can also type in places like say for example "Philippines": (Below you will see a flash widget for the search result).

I am actually having fun during my stay there. Searching for programmers, Bill Gates came first on the line.

One thing good about searching there is that they help you specify your search. If you type in Philippine a lot of specifications would drop down giving you an idea of how to specify it. On the right side there are also some ideas to narrow your search.

They already received industry acclaim and awards from respected technology luminaries. Spock was also selected as one of PC Magazine's "Top 25 Websites to Watch" in 2007.

Singapore

After the Malaysia trip we decided to drop by and tour Singapore for two(2) days. If Malaysia has lovely "island bars" imagine my delight when I saw Singapore's "island bars" (refer to the picture at the right).

The bougainvillea flowers they used are just "ordinary" here in the Philippines but they used it to beautify the most part of their city! Wow. Can we not do that in our country as well? Hay. Hay. Lovely lovely. And the trees? Grabe. Salute to the people who landscaped their country. I heard Pinoys did the landscaping? Is it true? Ha? Ha?

We slept right away when we arrived. (Of course we need to recharge after the hectic non-stop travel in Malaysia).

If in Malaysia it's Genting Highlands you must visit, in Singapore it's Sentosa Island. So, by 6pm we decided to visit and watch the highlight show in Sentosa Island which is the "Songs of the Sea". It's an amazing show! They used a musical fountain and interacted it with lasers against the water particles to create 3D images. It was purely MA-GEE-CAL! I wished my sister and brother was with us that time.

We did not get to tour around the Island that much since it's already dark. But they have a nightlife in the island, I guess. Judging from the outfits of the young-uns. Hehe. There's a cable car in the island as well and it's quite different from the one in Malaysia because underneath the cable car would be minus the forest but the sea. But, I will surely try out the cable car when me and my family would visit Singapore for a vacation.

There are different ways to get in and out of the island. Renting a taxi ($35), ride a train, ride the Sentosa Bus, Cable Car, or your own private car.

We spent most of our time in Orchard Road. If you are the type of person who loves to shop, Orchard Road is the place for you. The whole of Orchard Road is filled with shopping malls. I can't name most of them, but all I remember is getting inside. Hehe. There is no trouble if you just use your feet in Singapore since everything is prolly "just-a-walk-away". Unless you are a person who can't stand walking! But, if you are a person who resides in Davao "walk-a-thon" is not a foreign word. In fact everything would be near for you. :) *walang problema pag networker ka!*

I got to visit their National Museum but not the whole of it. The building looks nice noh? :) Very attractive.

If we have the Malacañang Palace and U.S the White House, in Singapore they have the Istana Singapore. If you are on the way to visit the shopping malls in Orchard Road you can pass by the Istana. The home of their Prime Minister.

We took the last flight out of Singapore to Manila so we can fully enjoy our stay at the Singapore Changi Airport. It's like a big shopping mall. They have a wide array of duty free shops and eating outlets. They also have "free internet" which explains my "Greetings from Singapore post". Hehe. They have free massages located everywhere as well.

Changi Airport is the 22nd busiest airport & one of the busiest cargo airports in the world and the 6th busiest in Asia. They have six open air garden areas and during our stay I got to visit the two. I don't know where the other four are located. I only visited their Orchid and Fern garden.

I just have to salute and say thank you to the "smiling customs" in Malaysia and Singapore. They were friendly and not at all imposing compared to the ones in Philippines, sad to say. They would smile and encourage us to come back and even have the decency to ask us if we enjoyed our stay. If we forgot to fill something up in the customs form they would just smile and consult us.

I don't know if you travelers notice this but our customs here in the Philippines always have a serious face. No smiles and everything. Nada. I guess it's different if you are foreign or what? I'll keep this in mind when I go out this November I will look over the customs attending to foreign nationals. They could at least smile a bit and be forgiving to others when they forgot to fill something up. *my mom witnessed a scenario where the custom personnel would scold at a Balikbayan*. Hello! Philippines is our country, we should be welcomed with smiles! They could say "Hi Maam, Sir kumusta ang travel niyo?" or "Hi Sir welcome back to the Philippines!".

There's still a lot to improve in the Philippines. I do hope one day it would improve for the better. Seeing other countries excel inspires me and the desire to see Philippines improving is soooo strong. But, I shan't ask the government to do the improving. It is not a good question to ask because number one I don't think they can answer it and number two the government has matters and "personal agendas" to attend to. The future is not in their hands anyway. The future mga kababayan is WITH US.

So let's stop asking what our country/government can do for us instead let's ask OURSELVES "WHAT WE CAN DO FOR OUR COUNTRY". I think that's better di ba? :)

It doesn't matter if we can't do GREAT THINGS we can do SMALL THINGS in a GREAT WAY! Go go PINOY! Wag antayin ang gobyerno. Hehe. Let's do it ourselves!

Full Moon

Scene One

Me: Ma, Ate C. made a scene at the office last night. { explains why }

Mama: Was the moon full last night?

Me: Yes.

Scene Two

Me: Auntie... Ate C. acted up last night..

Aunt: mhmmm....lunatics... was the moon full?

When my aunt mentioned the word "lunatic" in relation to the full moon, I suddenly realized why lunatics were called as that.

As everyone is aware by now "lunatic" came from the word lunar which means moon.

Lunatics have a tendency to act up and be worse when the moon is full, it's what happened to Ate C. Everyone who knew her and who frequents in the office knows about her condition. She's not exactly "that" crazy or whatsoever... but somehow may "pagka".

The night the moon was full an issue triggered her and she kept on ranting and raving in front of oh so many people. It was the peak hour of the night where everyone's making their transactions. I'm sure to those who knew her would understand her but to the new ones... oh well... I wonder what's going on in their mind.

So... nowww... everyone's on the lookout for "full moons" and careful not to offend her or anything.

-------------------------------------------

It's been a problem for mayors, specially for Mayor Duterte in Davao about minors who cannot be jailed due to the law that prohibits it. I've heard about this issue last year, where all the minors who were caught would just present their birth certificate and claim to be a minor and they would get away from charges like murder, rape, and stealing.

There was this guy who was murdered by a minor at a funeral. The relative of the victim who were all "of age" beat up the murderer and brought him to the precint. The murderer's parents brought out his birth certificate and said he was a minor making the police people incapable of jailing the murderer. Instead, the parents of the murderer brought out charges to the relatives of the victim who beated him up.

Children that disobeys the law would just shout at the police "I'm a minor. You can't put me to jail!". Gang wars continued to be unstoppable.

In Mayor Duterte's show "Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa" he said: "The man who made the bill and the congress people who approved of it does not know a thing or two about being a mayor or was never a mayor."

The senator who made the bill (di ko na sasabihin kung sino... na disappoint nga ako.. siya pala ang gumawa noon) based it in Europe where the society is far more different from ours. They have this kind of law BUT they have institutions that would take over the minor law breakers... and we don't have that... YET.

I do hope when they made the bill they have checked the effects and all....

It was not balanced. They overlooked a lot of things.

If I am a minor I can certainly steal and kill and then get away with it until I turn 18. Every kid knows that. Every minor who breaks the law knows that.

Mayor: "If they don't do something.... I would supply the grenades and s**** (i forgot the term that could have mean Indian Pana) and have them fight and kill each other. Good people should hide and stay up from them. At least in that way..... devils would be sorted out." ("ako na ang mag supply sa granada ug s**** unya mag pinatyanay na sila. Katong mga maayong tao... panago na lang mo ug palayo sa ila. Para mabawasan ug yawa ang atong dakbayan."

Funny how mayor said that. Nyahaha. Kind of makes sense. I do hope people in the senate would do something about this. :)

Have a great week ahead GUYS! :) Stay happy!

Last Days of Summer

Mom promised us to watch Pirates of the Carribean 3: At World's End and so we did last Saturday (May 26). Review @ Espresso Break.

May 27 - A summer won't be complete if one does not head to the beach even just once. And so, we asked our parents to at least treat us for a beach outing. We went to a very known resort in Samal Island which is Paradise Island. It was crowded and I figured it was because of the cars parked in Davao plus it is a Sunday. Their boat ride improved. They already have an announcement in English probably designed for tourists. ( Starvation Heights(the book), Buko Juice and Kiamoy!)

One thing I like there was their food and of course the cottages they have for you to sleep on and read a good book. Davao sure seems like a small place, I met high school classmates and a couple of familiar faces. We weren't able to get a cottage to stay overnight because it was fully-booked which was O.K. and it kinda forced me to go take a dip (because I don't usually swim like I do when I was a kid. I only go to beaches to read and eat. Muwahaha. adik talaga). It was nice that I decided to swim (never mind the tan!) because I got to feed big fishes! Wooohoo. They have this place where you can feed and swim at the same time..

Oh and by the way, I would like to greet Chaya dear a Happy Birthday. She is in Kenya now and we rarely get our hi's and hello's nowadays. Happy Birthday!!! Missss youuu!

from L-R: Ate Kai, Me, Abigail, Yehyeh and Darlene

The next day(Monday, May 28), Yehyeh invited us over at her place for her slumber party. She invited us ever since the start of summer, either it gets canceled or something comes up making one unable to come. We watched 3 movies, The Illusionist, and to my horror Saw II and Arahan. It took us a long time to start our movie-watching because we were so busy slicing up the cake and laughing over a couple of things.

Yesterday(May 29), we left Yehyeh's place and headed home by 3pm.

I was asked to attend a seminar called "Survival Rate for Stage 4 and Terminal Cancer Patients Using U.S. FDA Approved Alternative Therapies" hosted by PCAM (Philippine College for the Advancement in Medicine and IIPA (International Iridology Practitioners Association) which I am part of.

Our lecturer Professor Xu Kecheng M.D. came from China and leads a hospital named Fudo Cancer Hospital at Guangzhou. Mostly, people who go there from different parts of the world are people who were rejected by other doctors. Amazingly, Professor Xu's Fuda hospital obtains a 70% long-time survival rate for Stage 4 and terminal cancer patients. In fact, one of his patients is a prominent Filipino with a liver cancer and he is not telling his name which is O.K.

The hospital gives you a choice whether you would want to undergo surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy or not. Most doctors would suggest you to undergo chemo for there are no other choice they say and basically I don't think chemo is healthy and I would not recommend other people to do it. The survival rate of Chemo is low and people who went under it usually survives for 4 months *(depends on the stage and the will to live)*.

I like Fudo's concept which is: "Appreciate Life and Never Give Up". They never give up on their patients and they always try hard to give them treatment. Their method is a mix of High Technology and Traditional Chinese Medicine which is pretty good. They believe in integration.

So, what are their treatments? Their main treatment is Cryosurgery. Yes, it is surgery still but it is a NON-invasive treatment. They simply freeze the tumor and take it out. They have other treatments as well like Photodynamic Therapy and Immuno Therapy.

Fuda is well staffed with 40 MD's and 60 nurses. Of the doctors, 37 are trained in Western medicine and 3 in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Fuda has 80 PRIVATE rooms with 2 beds each, one for the patient and the other for a companion (the bed for the companion, they say is much more comfortable than the patient). It has 100 wards with 150 beds. Fuda is in Guangzhou, very near Manila which only takes 2 hours to reach there.

Basically, Fuda only treats patients with tumor. They don't treat leukemia, since it is entirely different and they can't use cryosurgery for it. For leukemia patients, I suggest you go to a CERTIFIED alternative doctor with a western medicine background and make sure you research them o.k.?

I like the comment of Professor Xu and his translator Miss Lao (yes, he needs a translator which kinda makes the lecture a bit boring...) of Davao. "I think Davao is a nice place and when we were walking I feel safe, the police do their jobs." Was it a sign he is coming back to Davao ? Hehe.

NOTE: Attend Professor Xu's seminar for more information, if one is available over there.

For Cebu City: June 2, 5:30 to 9:30pm. Registration: 100Php. Free for PCAM members. at Cebu Country Club, Gov. M. Cuenco Ave., Banilad, Cebu City.

For health BUFFS out there, I can inform you of upcoming seminars if you want just give me a message and your contact number. (Specially people from Davao, I get updated once in awhile here.) :)

Enjoy the last days of Summerrr!!

2 SMRT 4 U

Everyone's hearing about online predators and cyberbullies.. and in the U.S. it is pretty much rampant. I found this site online that gives away advocacy rings to help you remember and be aware of seedy people online.

They offer lots of tips... to help keep yourself safe online. I know it affects most of the US residents only but it helps to at least be aware of what's happening and be more careful everyday. You can also listen and watch to two different testimonies of what they experienced in real life.

I signed up for the advocacy ring they are giving away last month.... and they said it takes 2-3 months to get it because it's overseas.

-------------------------------------

I'm not a Pinoy Big Brother fan... but I'm beginning to enjoy their tasks and some punishments. Nyahaha. The four(housmates) being punished this week was Nel, Bruce, Saicy, and Bea for doing the "Number 1*" at the garden. They were supposed to balance the "arinola" at their head for the whole day(While eating, urinating.. etc.) then circle the garden twice, and then dance without letting the arinolas fall. Basta, it was sooo funny. Too bad, it's usually aired late at night.

But, I like the Season 2 housemates better compared to the first(di ko kasi napanood ang first). I usually don't care about PBB... but their batch this season was good.. different personalities... meron syempre bad sides... pero... that's part. I like it because they help each other and they have a good bond already. Most of them (the ones left in the house) are good sports naman so far.

Speaking of addiction.....

I have a picture of a certain plant called "Kachubong/Katchubong". {never mind the spelling} The picture was taken at Salumay Busay Resort and it was my first time to see and touch the plant. (No, I did not try it's whimsical effects)

I heard from our local news station last year that this certain plant is being used as a hallucinogen.

It is said to have extreme effects that leaves a person the inability to differentiate reality from fantasy.

In other places it is called Datura. This plant has different colors.... as well. This is also called Jimsonweed, in the Western part.

A mnemonic for the psychological effects of kachubong intoxication:

"blind as a bat, mad as a hatter, red as a beet, hot as hell, dry as a bone, the bowel and bladder lose their tone, and the heart runs alone."
The most famous account of jimsonweed intoxication can be found at The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge by Carlos Castaneda.

"She is as powerful as the best of allies, but there is something I personally don't like about her. She distorts men. She gives them a taste of power too soon without fortifying their hearts and makes them domineering and unpredictable. She makes them weak in the middle of their great power."

Trivias:

  • Datura is the plant given to pacify the mentally handicapped brother in William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury.
  • In the novel The Sundial by Maarten 't Hart, datura is used twice as a poison.
  • Singer/songwriter Tori Amos penned a trance song entitled "Datura" for her 1999 album "To Venus and Back". The song features Amos reading a list of various plants that are growing in her garden over hypnotic piano and rhythms. She consistently mentions datura within the list, as if to indicate it is overgrowing and destroying her garden. The flower, in the song, is used as a metaphor for destructive relationships.
  • The psychedelic rock band Bardo Pond named a song "Datura" in his album "Set and Setting". Many other Bardo Pond album and song titles have been derived from the names of esoteric psychedelic substances.
  • In the movie XXX the darts used to knock out Xander (Vin Diesel) and that he later uses to appear to kill an undercover policeman are referred to as 'Datura knockout darts' by their creator.

WARNING: "Self-experimentation is not recommended and must be strictly avoided by anyone who suffers any kind of heart condition. The effects are stimulating on the central nervous system and simultaneously depressing on the peripheral nerves. Symptoms include an increased heart rate, drying up of the mucus membranes, a dry throat and sometimes cramps. At first the effects are arousing, sometimes manifesting as uncontrolled talking or laughing, forgetfulness and indulging in senseless repetitive activities. Vivid hallucinations and delirious illusions may also occur. Occasionally the effects can produce extreme violence and destructive urges. The period of agitation is usually followed by a deep prolonged sleep accompanied with vivid dreams and hallucinations, often of a sexual nature. Upon awakening one might experience a distinct hang-over and a total lack of memory as to what actually happened during the state of altered consciousness."

13teen

It's Friday the 13th.

Some say it's lucky others say it's unlucky.... I searched it's history...there's nothing to be afraid of really.

I like 13... since it's pretty much my birthdate.

If only there would be a 13th month.... I'd name it Elaramber.

Why Elaramber? Hehe. Find out yourself... and you would win a trip to Timbuktu. Hehe. *ok-i'm-only-joking*

  2. The nursery rhyme Ring Around the Rosey is a rhyme about the plague. Infected people with the plague would get red circular sores ("Ring around the rosey..."), these sores would smell very badly so common folks would put flowers on their bodies somewhere (inconspicuously), so that it would cover the smell of the sores ("...a pocket full of posies..."), People who died from the plague would be burned so as to reduce the possible spread of the disease ("...ashes, ashes, we all fall down!")

The best poem in Rondeau is the World War I poem, In Flanders Fields, by John McCrae:
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead; short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe!
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Going Random 1

Nothing exciting is going on... so I might as well bombard you with Information today... and share five random nothings that might be something. I'll be having this kind of segment when the mood strikes me.. hehe

---------------------------
1. I.T. Parks

Cebu just had their I.T. park... and I was really eyeing Damosa's progress ever since then. I know it would be proclaimed as an I.T. park one day... and it was. Damosa (Davao Motor Sales), is a place here in Davao.... and it is being developed. New establishments opens almost every other week.

Related Topic: Arroyo okays Damosa land as IT Park

2. La Toscana - A taste of Italy

I finally got the chance to dine at La Toscana last April 1, 2007. It is an authentic Italian restaurant... with the Italian owner as it's chef. Lovely, cozy place and yummy authentic Italian dishes.

So, if you visit Davao and you are craving for an Italian dish... drop by @ La Toscana

3. Photo-Reading

I saw a video about Photo-Reading last night... I got three techniques that I need to work on. I know it's not enough, but-hey I will perfect it and when I get the whole Photo-reading module.. I'd be photo-readig everything! Woohoo.

So.. Watch out my Mushroom Book Stands.. I won't be buying loads of books.. I'd photo read them in a couple of minutes and see whether I want to buy it or not.

4.Korean-Infested

Ive seen loads of Korean business people ever since last year. They've been investing loads of money here in Davao, in fact they have already overtaken the investment of the Japs here.

In fact one of our hotels, Apo View was rented for a year by the Koreans... they opened up a Korean barbeque... hmmm that's one place I would love to try.

5.A Mount Apo hiker dies

I saw the news and the video of his drowning. Yes, he drowned at Lake Venado, just below the peak of Mount Apo . The natives in Apo believed the Lake is enchanted, and it was not it's first incident. Many hikers have died when they tried to swim the lake.

Come on, who wouldn't? The lake is 20 ft deep and cold, for crying out loud. The hiker was recovered after 3 days.

So, before you jump-in... safety first guys. :)

A Dalmatian

This is my Dalmatian Post. 101. Haha. :P

Here’s the catch, the title is, 15 simple but amazing facts about me. All you have to do is to post random facts and make it as interesting as possible. The facts doesn’t have to be positive attitudes, this will just widen the knowledge of the readers about you. You have to tag 3 more people after this. Goodluck! : Tagged by Abi

How do i make something ordinary into something pretty interesting haa? I'm not so sure if my 15 facts would be amazing... but here goes nothing....
  1. When I'm about to reach the last stage of school, I wanna get out of that school quick. It's a wonder I'm in college without quitting at the last stage(although, yeah I've been dropping hints and say "Ma, I wanna stop."). In elementary I switched to a public school when I was in Grade 6, and in H.S. I switched to "home study" during my 4th year.
  2. One of the reasons why I wanna stop when I was in my 4th year was because I read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad"... and I don't see any point for me to study when I can go and make money and get real FINANCIAL education outside school. Don't flame me, I know how "education" is important but it really depends on where you are getting your degree you know.
  3. I never attended a prom, because there was no chance to. When I was in 3rd year our school did not allow the prom due to an incident from the last year batch and I was having my "home study" when I was in 4th year. -_-
  4. I dreamed of being a spy/detective/CIA agent when I was young. Until now, I think it's cool, but then there'd be days when I have to take someone's life when I have that profession... soo fat chance.
  5. I don't like guyabano and pineapple.
  6. I love vanilla ice cream shake.
  7. I'm a crybaby. I cry when I'm angry, happy, confused etc.
  8. It is in my nature to be sweet to selected people...
  9. I stay away from people I can't understand.... but sometimes I feel bad about it.
  10. I'd rather give :P
  11. I only get moody at home, specially when I'm in front of the PC and they go "annoy" me. I'm trying to change it.
  12. I don't like replying to unknown texters. I'd reply only once.. and that's it.
  13. I used to play the piano and have piano recitals when I was in kindergarten but I stopped due to "money matters" but now when I can... I can't because.. I can't make way/time for it.
  14. I prefer reading books than going out.
  15. I love beaches when I was young, I still love them but I don't swim like before.
So that's about it.

I'm skipping a class again. I'm slacking off because..
  1. I only have one class (and an hour long) to attend to.
  2. Waste of money
  3. I still have to revise my thesis
  4. I can't move my butt off the pc now that I'm blogging.
  5. I'm thinking of soo many alibi's but the main reason is....
  6. I don't want to go.
Have a great week everyone. :)

Monuments of Great Men

We had a certain family(couple) member who stayed in Kenya, Nairobi for six months and who stayed for two months in Germany.

They talked about how Kenya was like, that it wasn't that HOT and sunny all the time after all. Although one part which is an 8 hour drive from Nairobi, near the coast would be sooo much like Cebu, the weather that is. They talked about all the things that are feared by most they have gone through all of it and of course they talked about they've had enough and would not be coming back to really stay there.

Poverty is pretty much evident in those parts. If you've seen poverty in the Philippines, boy you've never heard far more than that than in those places. You would begin to realise that "Hey, I'm blessed after all.. I can eat 3times a day and all that."

In every poverty-stricken country you can always pinpoint that the government is corrupt. Yup, pretty much more corrupt than our country.

What is saddening about the country is the way the people live. I'll give some examples about how poor their situation is.

  • they get to eat one heavy meal a day.

  • You'd see people lying on the grass by midafternoon. You would think they are sleeping which is in fact true but the reason for their sleeping is because they are HUNGRY. They believed that they would be FULL when they lie down and get the energy of the land.

  • Rice is a luxury. It costs 180-200 pesos half kilo.

  • Girls always skip class 2-3 days a month whenever their period strikes because they have no money to buy sanitary napkins

  • Most of them walk to work because they don't have enough money to ride the Matatu (their public transpo much like our jeepneys here)

Actually, there are still more saddening information but I'm not gonna dwell on them since my post is about Monuments of Great Men.

Anyway, they stayed in Kenya for 6 months. They got a visa for Germany, actually it was a visa wherein they could travel to different countries in EU except Britain and Switzerland I think. Anyhow, they were riding an Egyptian airline for Germany. The rate of the airline is actually half of the rates compared to Lufthansa and other airline companies.

Airline: "Our rates are pretty much good right? Well, only one downside of it. It's because you won't directly go to Germany we will be stopping for a night in Cairo. Sorry for the inconvenience."

But of course, we Pinoys would definitely love a sight-seeing and it was free sooo why not?

Couple: "Would we have Visa's for that ?"
Airline:"Of course we will take care of your visa and your hotel accomodation."
Couple:"Oh ok, that would be fine."

But deep inside... one would definitely get excited.

They got the tour to see the pyramids of Egypt and the Sphinx in Giza. With all it's glory, they were awestruck. It was really a great experience they say. They saw the Sphinx and behind the Sphinx was the pyramids. The Sphinx was created in monument of men, the egyptians. Before, the Egyptians were really on top. They created the Sphinx and it symbolizes strength and power.

Behind it are the Pyramids. It's supposed to guard the pyramids, that's what they say. It's face was meant to be in honor of an Egyptian Pharoah. It has a "missing nose" and it was believed that it was broken off by a cannon ball fired by one of Napoleon's soldier.

Anyway, when you gaze in front of the Sphinx you'd be awed specially by the view behind it, which are the Pyramids. But, have you ever wondered what the Sphinx is gazing at nowadays? -_-

I have to google for the picture. Haha.

image from TrekEarth.

There you go! With all it's splendour and glory the GREAT SPHINX faces it's opponent. A chicken! Of all the fast food chain in the world... why KFC(notice the red sign of KFC)? And of all the types of chicken whyyyy should it be the "FRIED" onesss? Could it have been much better if the chicken was alive?

God really has a humor. In fact God invented humor. The Ancient Egyptians were so proud of their accomplishments before. And now...... it faces it's opponent.

They also saw the Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, and the Mercedes Benz museum. Each different monument/memoirs of great men behind it.

It actually made them realise that great men can make a monument of what they have done in the past to show to the world in the future about what they accomplished but it's just PHYSICAL. What good would a monument be ? Sure, it has it's part of being amazing (like the pyramids which were created without the use of mortar and was done mathematically right.), sure it is a reminder, but then what? What good would it be to the next generation?

Men can make monuments of their accomplishment. And you can see that behind every monument there is a great man who HAD A DREAM. A great man who wanted sooo much and nurtured that DREAM and thus in the process made itself a monument as a reminder of what he has done.

A monument is a great reminder. But, what's best is to SHARE the DREAM to the NEXT GENERATION so that they to... will learn how to LIVE THEIR own DREAM. Not just SHOW but SHARE. Not just stones and rubbles but it should be alive and with a heart that could be passed on from generation to generation.

The marble keeps merely a cold and sad memory of a man who would else be forgotten. No man who needs a monument ever ought to have one.

Hey, I'm not putting down the monuments ok? It's just that we all need more than just a monument of a great person. -_-

Traffic Lights

Two weeks ago our old traffic lights here in Davao was replaced by new ones. They had the dry-run. Everybody noticed it. The new traffic lights caused too much traffic in the dry-run. I think the motorists were just adjusting and in the long run the new traffic lights would then be to our advantage. Just now, I was checking my Google Alerts I have in my gmail. I actually signed up for it. This Google Alert, would alert me about anything that is happening in the Philippines and in Davao in case I won't have any chance of watching the news.

Anyway, my eye caught this headline -> "Davao's new traffic system is "Asia's most modern"

Davao’s new traffic signalization system, despite experiencing dry run problems, is the most modern in Asia, a traffic management official here said.

The P140-million traffic system was implemented on Dec. 19, but Mayor Rodrigo Duterte ordered its suspension days after it created traffic jams in some of the city’s major intersections.

Gempesaw said other Asian cities installed traffic systems much earlier and are now just upgrading technology. In the 1990s, he said, Cebu’s traffic system was the most modern in the country.

The system will be run via a command center using video cameras in intersections. It is thus capable of watching out for traffic violators on camera.

Gempesaw said four US-based consultants of the contractor are expected to arrive this week to help fine-tune the system.

“No matter how modern the system is, there would be a problem if the people are not attuned to it,” he said.

Gempesaw said they are preparing information and education modules to inform the public, especially those in barangays, about the new traffic system.

Woo. So the traffic lights are even better than I thought it would be. You see, it's my dream (ever since I got to visit Hong Kong and saw their traffic lights with matching sound effects) to have our traffic light upgraded and just now it began to materialize. Even better. Which actually makes sense, since if we will do some upgrading why not settle for the best ones right? It might cost a lot (just like the new streen signs. It was upgraded twice. Soo much improvement.) but then everyone in Davao should be used to such modernities. We need it guys.

Davao is much too laid-back and not exactly that modern. Mayor Digong don't leave us just yet. -_-
