The Journey of a Hero - Lakbayani Program

Ever since, I started to continue  my journey with a group of like minded individuals from MISSION (http://imaginalmission.net) last July, things started to propel faster than I expected. And it's not just wishful thinking, but it's a walk, a movement where indeed Love moves.

And with this I will be presenting you with a wonderful journey... an initiative of Manila Node.... called the Lakbayani Program...
Below is an invitation.... for you to join in on the program....

Here's to wishing you a divine quest for the coming years.....

Sin Cere,

Tina L.
(There Is No Alternative but Love)

LAKBAYANI, THE JOURNEY OF THE HERO

Madaling Maging Bayani sa Sariling Bayan. Its easy to be a hero in one's own country. In the midst of the struggles and challenges we face, there are stories of hope, stories of ordinary people living extraordinary lives. These are individuals and groups with initiatives in every field, working for a more positive, holistic and sustainable Philippines. There is a better Philippines that already exists and MISSION Manila has mapped out their heroic feats in partnership with Barangay San Antonio in Pasig City, The Goodwill Group of Companies, Earth Flora,The Green Shop, 4Life and Ataman Koop.

LAKBAYANI is a celebration of projects and initiatives of countless Filipino heroes. MISSION Manila and its partners are bringing the good news that there are Filipino heroes working in the grassroots, contributing to building a better country through their work in politics, business and culture. Singapore

After the Malaysia trip we decided to drop by and tour Singapore for two(2) days. If Malaysia has lovely "island bars" imagine my delight when I saw Singapore's "island bars" (refer to the picture at the right).

The bougainvillea flowers they used are just "ordinary" here in the Philippines but they used it to beautify the most part of their city! Wow. Can we not do that in our country as well? Hay. Hay. Lovely lovely. And the trees? Grabe. Salute to the people who landscaped their country. I heard Pinoys did the landscaping? Is it true? Ha? Ha?

We slept right away when we arrived. (Of course we need to recharge after the hectic non-stop travel in Malaysia).

If in Malaysia it's Genting Highlands you must visit, in Singapore it's Sentosa Island. So, by 6pm we decided to visit and watch the highlight show in Sentosa Island which is the "Songs of the Sea". It's an amazing show! They used a musical fountain and interacted it with lasers against the water particles to create 3D images. It was purely MA-GEE-CAL! I wished my sister and brother was with us that time.

We did not get to tour around the Island that much since it's already dark. But they have a nightlife in the island, I guess. Judging from the outfits of the young-uns. Hehe. There's a cable car in the island as well and it's quite different from the one in Malaysia because underneath the cable car would be minus the forest but the sea. But, I will surely try out the cable car when me and my family would visit Singapore for a vacation.

There are different ways to get in and out of the island. Renting a taxi ($35), ride a train, ride the Sentosa Bus, Cable Car, or your own private car.

We spent most of our time in Orchard Road. If you are the type of person who loves to shop, Orchard Road is the place for you. The whole of Orchard Road is filled with shopping malls. I can't name most of them, but all I remember is getting inside. Hehe. There is no trouble if you just use your feet in Singapore since everything is prolly "just-a-walk-away". Unless you are a person who can't stand walking! But, if you are a person who resides in Davao "walk-a-thon" is not a foreign word. In fact everything would be near for you. :) *walang problema pag networker ka!*

I got to visit their National Museum but not the whole of it. The building looks nice noh? :) Very attractive.

If we have the MalacaƱang Palace and U.S the White House, in Singapore they have the Istana Singapore. If you are on the way to visit the shopping malls in Orchard Road you can pass by the Istana. The home of their Prime Minister.

We took the last flight out of Singapore to Manila so we can fully enjoy our stay at the Singapore Changi Airport. It's like a big shopping mall. They have a wide array of duty free shops and eating outlets. They also have "free internet" which explains my "Greetings from Singapore post". Hehe. They have free massages located everywhere as well.

Changi Airport is the 22nd busiest airport & one of the busiest cargo airports in the world and the 6th busiest in Asia. They have six open air garden areas and during our stay I got to visit the two. I don't know where the other four are located. I only visited their Orchid and Fern garden.

I just have to salute and say thank you to the "smiling customs" in Malaysia and Singapore. They were friendly and not at all imposing compared to the ones in Philippines, sad to say. They would smile and encourage us to come back and even have the decency to ask us if we enjoyed our stay. If we forgot to fill something up in the customs form they would just smile and consult us.

I don't know if you travelers notice this but our customs here in the Philippines always have a serious face. No smiles and everything. Nada. I guess it's different if you are foreign or what? I'll keep this in mind when I go out this November I will look over the customs attending to foreign nationals. They could at least smile a bit and be forgiving to others when they forgot to fill something up. *my mom witnessed a scenario where the custom personnel would scold at a Balikbayan*. Hello! Philippines is our country, we should be welcomed with smiles! They could say "Hi Maam, Sir kumusta ang travel niyo?" or "Hi Sir welcome back to the Philippines!".

There's still a lot to improve in the Philippines. I do hope one day it would improve for the better. Seeing other countries excel inspires me and the desire to see Philippines improving is soooo strong. But, I shan't ask the government to do the improving. It is not a good question to ask because number one I don't think they can answer it and number two the government has matters and "personal agendas" to attend to. The future is not in their hands anyway. The future mga kababayan is WITH US.

So let's stop asking what our country/government can do for us instead let's ask OURSELVES "WHAT WE CAN DO FOR OUR COUNTRY". I think that's better di ba? :)

It doesn't matter if we can't do GREAT THINGS we can do SMALL THINGS in a GREAT WAY! Go go PINOY! Wag antayin ang gobyerno. Hehe. Let's do it ourselves!

Disaster

I've been somewhat a bad blogger nowadays since I don't update much as often as I want to. Wait? Did I just say that in my previous entries? T_T

Anyhow, me and my parents flew to Manila last September 15 and then by September 17 me, my parents and the rest of the group in the Travel Seminar Incentive flew to Malaysia. We then flew to Singapore (September 22) and stayed there for two(2) days and went back to Manila(September 24).

I just got back in Davao(September 27) yesterday.

My parents and I were supposed to be back by September 26 but due to "unforeseen circumstances" we were delayed. Here's the sitch:

We were scheduled for the 5:54pm flight and we checked out from the hotel by 10:30am arrived at the airport by 11:00am hoping to catch the two remaining flights scheduled 1:00pm and 4:00pm as chance passengers. We were then informed that the two remaining flights are fully booked and we have to wait by the side, a very uncomfortable place for one and the chance of getting three seats is 50/50. So, we decided to check-in early for the 5:54pm flight and wait at the business class lounge (fortunately the company booked us in the Mabuhay Class hehe).

The airline did not inform us about the change of aircraft due to "maintenance" and so they subjected to "double seating". It was basically the fault of the maintenance team because when they changed the system into the smaller aircraft they did not check whether someone was checked in to the said flight (and it's protocol to check before they change). Basically, we were not included in the system.

We were given the DB (Denied Boarding) and since it was their fault they said they would take care of our hotel accommodation, transport in and out of the hotel, meals, the choice of any flight the next day and three(3) round trip business class tickets that is valid for a year. Wow. For a simple inconvenience we were given those.

We took the first flight out of Manila to Davao which was scheduled to leave by 4:30 am and was once again delayed because one passenger had an accident when a heavy cabin luggage fell on the passenger's head.

Oh well, so much for hurrying to get home. We really wanted to be home as soon as possible because we missed everybody in Davao. Boohoo.

The incident might have been annoying if we choose to react on the situation but then we were reminded about the quote "all things work together for good" and in between those scenarios I presented above a "major scene" happened in Davao particularly in our office that kinda enraged me.

I don't think I can mention anything from that scene because that certain exaggerated "station" might once again "harass" us. Poof. I mean we admit we did something "wrong" there. We take FULL RESPONSIBILITY and we are SORRY about our NEGLIGENCE. There is truth in what they say about the technicality we did but not in WHAT THEY DO and HOW THEY DID IT. Couldn't they at least have the decency to "talk it out in a PROFESSIONAL WAY" and not the childish manner that everyone witnessed?

We are not criminals and it was not right to treat us that way. I mean a grade school student would notice something "fishy" over what they did. I lost respect of that certain "station" and those kind of media people (not everyone ok?) who lacked ethics and is all about "the story and the money they would prolly get from that scoop" and not caring for the people who is working hard for their future. But then, what comes around goes around. Maybe, that's why that station was never a success because their principles and how they get their "scoop" are not good.

I'm not bitter or angered by the people behind it. I am angered by HOW THEY DID IT. They practically embarrassed everyone and the moral damage? My gulay. TSK. Very mean. But, thanks to you "certain station" we learned a lot from it....

lesson: "Why do we need disasters? The only time most of us ever learn anything is when we get hit over the back of the head. Why? Because it is easier NOT TO CHANGE. So we keep doing what we're doing until we hit a brick wall. The universe is always nudging us with gentle signals. When we ignore the signals it nudges us with a sledgehammer. Growth is more painful when we resist it." - from the book Follow your Heart.

What a nice lifelong lesson you left us with. Good thing we were taught not to react but just to RESPOND in these kind of situations. Your station made our bond stronger that we are always there for each other not just through GOOD TIMES but BAD TIMES and with DIFFICULT PEOPLE like you.

We owe it to you. We will be more careful this time. Watching our every move. But then, dear station you lost a lot of "viewers" and their respect as well. I guess that's part of the consequence you will receive. I do hope you learned something from it too and use the sitch as your advantage. This is not a lesson from a TEXTBOOK. THIS IS REAL.

Much thanks to our kickass lawyer.

Sorry dear readers if you couldn't get my drift but this is the best I can do without divulging the whole matter. Baka ano na naman ang sabihin nila... may pagkakamali ang grupo pero mali rin ang pag handle nila sa situation. Pero part yun sa process. All is well now. The case is closed.

For the pictures.... it will be on the next post. Hehe. Have a great weekend ahead! :)

H-H-P

Since, it's Independence Day and all....

It feels good... to at least enumerate a few things why we feel great about being Pinoy!

Tagged by Beejing.

Here’s how this goes:

1. Answer the question: What are the 3 signs you see happening now that make you say, “it feels great to be Pinoy?”

  1. HUMOR - even in the face of danger and terrifying moments. If you happen to take a look at our so-called horror movies (there might be a few exemptions, although I have yet to see a horror movie done by pinoy without a funny line..) they often mix it up with comedians.
  2. HOSPITALITY - We are good hosts. We serve the bests for our visitors foreign or not. We make sure everything's going smoothly and they are enjoying their stay.
  3. PASALUBONG - "Papa, Mama! Pasalubonggg!" Even a trip to the store won't save you from the shrilling cries of kids "pasalubong!!!". When one goes to a trip outside one's hometown or even out of the country... that person can never sleep until he/she has set aside "pasalubong" for his/her family and friends.

2. Tag 10 people.

Anyone can do this.... if you want.

3. Even if you’re not tagged, go ahead and join the fun!

Happy Independence Day!

Swarmed

The "7oth Araw ng Dabaw" went really well and was practically safe despite the "bomb threats", what with all the 1,500 police and military personnel who were deployed and fielded to various comvergence in Davao City . Surely, it would be another one of those "safe-moments". You would see military/police officials in every corner and certain random check-ups everywhere.

The City Parade was pretty much eventful. The organizers made it like a diorama, they wanted to ensure that the Davaoenos would be educated of the Davao's rich history as well as entertained.

The weather was great(compared to last year's rainy parade), it was gloomy at first but the sky brightened up by 9am.

Since, we are nearing the election .... the organizers have warned that the parade and the rest of the highlights of the Araw ng Dabaw 2007 celebration would not be open for the politicians to campaign.

"What are you really driving at Tina? Enough ad-libs already."

But despite the warning, the festivity was swarmed with politicians and politician-wanna-be's like R.G. who actually wore his campaign red and blue shirt that shouts G_ _ _ . Just fill in the blanks. It was soooo obviousssss!!!! Really. And, there were politicians who never attended previous Davao festivals but they were there just to be seen. Sheeeeeshhhh. -_-

I'm sure Mayor Duterte was not pleased when they showed up. But, he was actually fair when he was interviewed.

"I cannot prevent anybody from greeting us, from greeting the people of Davao City," he said. "This is a free country and this is not an exclusive exercise for the city where we can bar anybody from joining the stage."

But... but... it was sooo obvious. They were there for the campaign... to show-off their faces. They had their own personal agendas as to why they would attend it.

Soo... to the next city who will have their own celebrations/festivals before the elections be prepared for a politician's smiling i-wanna-lure-you-into-voting-me face.

and isn't it quite fitting that my Quote for the Day in my sidebar is:

Politics is too serious a matter to be left to the politicians. -Charles de Gaulle

Career?

Yesterday, there was this Career Caravan at UIC Bajada. We thought it was some kind of a seminar or something but when we arrived hosts from "Kuyaw" a local variety show here in Davao were there and it really did look like it was a variety show and not some seminar.

It turned out that those hosts are supposed to entertain the audience while waiting for "Tito Boboy" to arrive. Honestly, I don't know who "Tito Boboy" (Augusto Boboy Syjuco) was until I saw the mini book they were giving away to the people who were there. It was my first time to hear about him. I even thought it was "Buboy" from the APO Hiking Society. Hehe.

The book given away was "Salabat for the Filipino Soul" which is like "Chicken Soup for the Soul" right? But, the content is different since some of them has jokes before moving forward to a much serious story. (Actually, I did not read everything just yet. Just browsed some of them and laughed at the korny jokes inside.)

Deflate - the plates, Defrag - the frog, Devastation - the bus station.. those kind of jokes.

Oh and yeah the funny REAL NAME of SHOPS.. like

  • Bote Nga Sa Yo (Used Bottle Shop)
  • Candies be Love? (Candy Shop)
  • Common Cents Store (Sari-Sari Store)
  • CrispyPer Minute (Crispy Pata Eatery)
  • Curl up and Dye (Beauty Salon)
  • Dear Hunter (Mail Order Brides)
  • Goldirocks (Gravel and Sand Shop)
  • Juice Co. (Fruit Juice Stand)
  • Mane Attraction (Beauty parlor)
  • Mat & Jeep (Jeep Accessories Shop)
  • Meating Place (Meat Shop)
  • Meatropolis (Meat Shop)
  • Nacho Fast (Nachos to go)
  • Passers Buy (Convenience Store)
  • Saudia Hairlines (Beauty Salon)
  • Scissors Palace (Barber shop which would sound like Caesar's Palace)
  • Susan's Roses (Flower Shop)
  • The Way We Wear (Boutique)
  • Your Best Vet (Veterinary Clinic)
Which reminds me of a certain Barber Shop here in Davao named "Harry Cutter". Where else can you see these names but here in the Philippines. LOL

Oh well, Tito Boboy arrived like 3 pm and he arrived like a politician campaigning. Shaking hands, Beso Beso here and there. You can't help but think he might go and ran for office... or maybe promote someone's party which I would guess would be Pres. GMA's party. Oh well, whatever... we did not finish it since it's already 4pm and some of us still have the thesis defense the next day. We left early.

It's the thesis defense of my classmates (June, Avy, Renel, Giovanne, Pearl, Red, Bordz, Jhunnel, Cedrick, Franco and the rest of the gang). Be blessed guys!! YOU CAN DO IT. :)

for a foolish pride... love is the answer

MANNY WON! 3 rounds lang. Kakabitin! CONGRATS!!!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------

What is wrong with some people? Why do they act with their heads held up sooo high that even if you try to reach out for them they'd step on you like you are dirt?

My mom has 3 couple friends before. They go out with a lot of business people way back... you could say they have their bonding. My mom owns a service center. It's where people get the products and the services are for free, e.g. trainings, meetings and anything the distributors would suggest.

My mom discussed a couple of reasons to me as to why they would be SOOO angry and mean. But, it all got worst when mom went to India. She was invited by the country manager of DXN to speak to a training camp in India.

My mom told me, she had 9 hours to wait for a plane from Singapore to India. So, she decided to use their free e-mailing service. My mom was so ecstastic that time and decided to mail some of her friends. But, she forgot most of the mail addresses since it is back home, all she remembered was, (let's call her) "Ate L."'s email addy. (My mom does not know anything about the address book that time, she though she must memorize it.) So, she mailed her. Thinking, she is her friend after all. I mean, you can mail your friend anytime right? Do you remember at times when you are at a different place and wanting to share your happiness?

But maybe "Ate L." received it the wrong way. I don't know. Because, when my mom returned from India, they were already cold and distant. And then the rumors started.

But you see, my mom was really a good friend to them. She never said a word against them or spread rumors. When they were friends, my mom cherished their company, and my mom's friendship with them "is" genuine. Is not was.

Rumors. My mom knows how "Ate L." can talk against a person. If she hates or dislikes a person, she would badmouth them. And *gosh* you would not want to hear them. My mom heard a lot of her "bad-mouthing" acts, but she just kept silent. And my mom knows, she would be the center of all the "bad-mouthing" ideas from "Ate L.". I can say, my mom prepared herself for the worst rumor.

Rumors were spreading. Whenever my mom would hear about one, my mom would just say, "Hayaan mo na lang sila. Wala lang silang magawa." or "As long as I am not saying anything against them, it's ok." And sometimes my mom would just laugh it off.

By the way, they opened another service center. They separated from mom's. They'd try to compare the two service centers. Saying we are this and they are that. But my mom, would again say, "Hayaan mo lang."

There were a lot of rumors , it would probably take me a whole day to enumerate all of them. I'd rather not say anything about it, for it would be like putting a very bad light for them.

Anyway, this feud has been going on for years already. 2 or 3. I can't remember. I don't know how to call this kind of feud, because my mom never tried to take a hand against them. Never. She'd probably talk about what they are doing "in our home", a closet discussion. Where she lets it all out. And she would end up wondering why they are so mad, and would say, "Hayy Hayaan na lang natin."

Last week, my mom told me(she shares everything to me and even ask about my opinion) she would reach out to them. She would give 3 sets of gifts for them. And my dad cried when he learned about it. It was always in his heart to make ammends with them. He is the type of person who is peaceful. He dislikes fights/feuds.

And so, my mom asked me what we would give. I told her, a book or some audio tapes they can use for their trainings in their center. So, my mom bought it. She even wrapped it late at night.... making a letter.

My mom had it delivered by our ever dearest housemate, last Friday at their service center. Saturday morning, the gift was sent back by their janitor. Unopened. The card was untouched.

Janitor: Ipabalik daw. (*They want this returned.*)

and the Janitor went out without waiting for an answer.

Our service center is full of people, specially Saturdays. And everyone was shocked.

The people in the service center did not know about my mom giving them a gift. It was sent discretely, so that they(SAS) won't think, the giving of gift was just a show. You see, their minds are so shallow. And they act and think childishly sometimes, most often than not, all the time.

And this is one of their acts. My mom's secretary (who lives at our house also, and is very close to us) cried. She did not know about my mom giving a gift, now she knows. Everyone knows.

My mom called three of her friends, her business partners. Who knows about the on-going feud. And they all said the same advice.

If they don't want it known, they would give it discretely back at your home. Why would they return a gift at a public place? What's the purpose? Just place the gift on display, have everyone take a look at it, but dont let them touch it. They want the public to know, so be it.It will be your memory, that you tried, and yet they rejected it.

And I remember, this quote I read sometime ago:

Do not be humble to the haughty, Do not be haughty to the humble

I guess it's time. No, not to fight back. But not to be just pushed around. My mom is still trying hard to dismiss any horrible thoughts against them. And I know give her a few weeks, she will get over it.

But you see, it's not easy. It's not easy to step down and reach out to someone who gives out rumors, who in a sense hurts you all the time, and in return they'd still stick out with their foolish pride.

It hurts, and as Im writing this I'm crying. I know, I know Im being too emotional. But, it hurts. As mom was telling me the story how they rejected it. I was fighting back tears.

But I know.... the answer lies in one word. LOVE. We do not hate them, for if we hate them, we would be their prisoner. We would be fried by our own hate.

It is a choice. If we choose to live in love or live it with hate and fear.

There might be a lot of things that would give us the reason to hate them. But, we dismissed them. I always believed in unconditional love. No matter, how bad they are to us.

The Masters and greatest teachers who have walked in planet Earth, are those who discovered the secret of this world - and they refused to acknowledge it's reality.

Masters are those who have chosen only love. In every instance, in every moment, in every circumstance. Even as they are being killed, they loved their murderers. Even as they are being persecuted, they loved their oppressors.

Jesus, Buddha and many others. NO matter what religion, race, tradition, culture. It does not matter. What matters is how they lived their life. It was of LOVE and kindness. Compassion and Forgiveness. Happiness and peace. Hope and Faith.

We are called upon this world to make decisions, specially in personal relationships. On our way to mastery, - we must experience some things that would leave us with a choice.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE, that is the question.

Shakespeare was right. You have to ask this question. To be or not be who you are? Who are you? Are you of love? or are you of hate? Do you choose to live in love? or to live in fear? The answer lies within you. The answer would determine who you want to be.

And I want to be LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. It's all about LOVE.

Yes, the things that others say, think and do will sometimes hurt us - until they do not anymore. What will get us from here to there - must be admitted with TOTAL HONESTY - being willing to assert, acknowledge and declare exactly how we feel about a thing or a person.

We must say our truth, kindly and completely. Live the truth, gently, but totally and consistently. We must change our truth quickly and easily when our experience brings us to new clarity.

No one in their right mind, least of all GOD, would tell us, when we are hurt in a relationship (be it friends or loved one), to "stand aside, from it, cause it to mean nothing."

If we are now hurting, it is too late to cause it to mean nothing. Our task now is to decide what it does mean - and to demonstrate that. For in so doing, we choose and become who WE SEEK TO BE.

I guess, they don't like it when they see us so happy and full of love. After all those rumors. It gives them more reason to hurt us more.

But in the end, they cannot. Because you see.... LOVE indeed CONQUERS ALL.

Opening!

Ive been hearing about a lot of Pinoy achievements lately, and i want to post them here. But it would be too lengthy and all that. So i decided to make a different blog, when it comes to "pinoy's".

The idea struck me, when i attended some seminar in Grand Men Seng Hotel last Saturday about a certain Pinoy product, and in the end of his "SONA-like presentation" he commended all the PINOY's who won this and that. Which gave me a lot of ideas about what to blog about that day, but come to think of it... my blog post would be too long. Considering my constricted page, because i added a lot of stuffs in here to"entertain" you. uhmm Did it? Hehe

So, i began thinking about what to name the subdomain of the blog. The "Sikat ang pinoy" phrase suddenly popped in my mind. So i said to myself, if the subdomain name of "sikatangpinoy.blogspot.com" is not taken, it is meant to be MINE! (bwahaha). And sure enough, when i got home that day...... tada! It wasnt taken.

I registered it, made the layout today... and i finished it. That's me, if i want to do something... right away.. i make it RIGHT AWAY!
